The Story of Three Plastic Bottles

Plastic pollution is one of the biggest threats our oceans face today. The Story of Three Plastic Bottles shares the journeys of Pepsi bottles which take very different turns.

This amazing video debuted at the November 7 meeting of the TOGETHER FUN CLUB and is the product of a collaboration between 11-year-old Yasha, 9-year-old Daniel, and their father, Bijan, who live in Karlsruhe, Germany.

The Journeys

The first bottle in The Story of Three Plastic Bottles winds up in a landfill where the plastic contributes to leachate, a liquid pollution containing all kinds of harmful chemicals known to cause environmental issues and well as serious harm to human health.

The second bottle is carried by waterways to the ocean where rotating ocean currents known as gyres feed it into vast garbage patches that entrap ocean life and leach toxins into the water. One such patch in the Pacific Ocean is three times the size of France!

The third bottle is collected along with other plastic containers and compressed into a large cube, then shredded into smaller pieces, washed and melted into tiny pellets that are used as raw material for new useful plastic products.

A Possible Sequel in the Form of a Fourth Bottle?

Sadly, a whopping 91 percent of plastic doesn't actually get recycled, but what if we could be free of plastic altogether and use alternative packaging materials that didn't poison the environment?

Some entrepreneurs are looking at plant-based bottles, bags and food containers that decompose without harm to the environment. What ideas do you have for moving from plastic to renewables?
