The theme around the 4th gathering of the TFC is tree planting, which had me noticing all sorts of trees — or more specifically, artwork of trees — while surfing the internet and in random places around my house.
On Monday, I was consolidating the spare change I had collected over the past 15 years, when out of the thousands of coins I was pouring into a bucket, two tumbled onto the floor. The first was a 2020 U.S. quarter (worth 25 cents) depicting the planting of a tree! I didn't know such a coin even existed.
The second coin was a U.S. nickel (worth five cents) from 2005 depicting the explorers Lewis and Clark's first glimpse of the Pacific Ocean with the inscription, "Ocean in view! O! The Joy!" Notice the two pine trees on the cliff overlooking the ocean.
Where Do You See Trees?
What trees can you find hiding in your home? Have you ever seen one embossed on a coin or printed on a postage stamp? If you were to design a coin or stamp featuring trees, what would it look like?
TFC Challenge: What kind of trees can you find in your neighborhood? Try looking at a tree or leaf more closely than you ever have before and draw what you see.
