We are a family of bike-riders, which means that we have accumulated boxes and boxes of old bike tubes. While many of the bicycle tubes have been patched and re-patched, we haven't wanted to throw them away because the hole in the tube is always so small. Thus our collection grows!
A few years ago, a friend of ours, who is an avid biker, started making bike tube earrings. I bought a pair of her earrings and to date, they are the most complimented pair of earrings I've ever owned. Over the past few years, she stopped making them, and my pair broke - so I took it upon myself to figure out the tools needed to repair and make my own earrings.
Inspired by this fantastic club and group of people, Gabe, Kris (partner) and I have spent a few days working on bike tube earrings together! They are quite easy, if you'd like to try.
Tools needed for the job:
clean bike tubes
scissors to cut the tubes
exacto (or sharp knife) to design/cut the earrings
silicone mat (or a hard/durable surface) for cutting
earring hooks
needle nose pliers
a lot of patience, and your brilliant design ideas
They make great holiday gifts for people, and are a fun way to reuse old bike tubes!
Please let us know if you have any questions.
Ready to wear! Upcycling at its best! :-) Gabe, Whitney, and Kris
